Description

In Norway, just north of the Arctic Circle, there are the strongest tidal currents on the planet. saltstraumen Twice a day, 100 billion gallons of water flow through a narrow passage between the fjord and the endless open sea, following the tide. These conditions are a force of nature that creates more strength and pressure than any other tidal current. Swimming in it is a suicide mission for almost everyone.

So for everyone except saithe.

Norwegian saithe is not like any other fish. Fast, strong and agile, it is one of the very few species that can keep up with this dangerous current, and you can find plenty of saithe in Saltstraumen. A strong swimmer, the saithe can travel great distances in search of food and spawning grounds.

Saithe is shiny like silver and tastes very delicious. This silvery fish with a dark back is highly versatile and quite simply an excellent seafood item. Saithe is an excellent ingredient in the traditional cuisine of the Norwegian coastal regions, especially the different types of toppings (mostly meatballs made from grated potatoes, onions and gravy).

While saithe fillets are a classic of the Norwegian dinner table, your taste buds will definitely thank you for broadening your saithe horizons. The pearly gray meat is tougher than cod, making the fish equally suitable for cooking, stir-frying or barbecue, and you can use it in casseroles, soups or in the oven.
